Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Howrah Jail in West Bengal currently houses approximately eight Pakistani terrorists. Concerns have been raised that these inmates could exploit the ongoing unrest in the country to orchestrate conspiracies. Despite the high-risk nature of these prisoners, security lapses have been reported inside the jail, including unauthorized use of phones and forced extortion activities, as revealed by an investigation by Taaza TV.
According to Taaza TV, two inmates named Mohammad Akram and Munna Bhanu are accused of forcibly demanding money from families of newly arrested prisoners. One such case involves Abhijeet Das, a drug seller arrested on May 8 for selling prohibited substances and sent to jail custody by court order. Since then, multiple extortion calls have been made to his family from within the jail. The extorted money is being transferred via various UPI numbers. The investigation also uncovered a woman in Belur conducting mobile money transactions linked to these activities, along with evidence involving several companies.
Records indicate that Munna Bhanu’s mobile phone was used for multiple financial transactions by his associates, pointing to a wider network exploiting communication facilities within the jail. These findings raise serious questions about jail security and monitoring protocols. Authorities are urged to strengthen surveillance and control to prevent misuse of phones and extortion inside correctional facilities.
